- Community: Striving together for the common good and growing in relationship with God, one another, and self.
I was pleasantly surprised that community was strongly encouraged for an online university program. Each class encouraged communication and collaboration through interactive discussion boards, video discussions, and group projects. I loved receiving the “Prime Matters” emails, which not only encouraged spiritual growth but also helped me feel more connected to the campus despite living so far away.
2. Hospitality: Receiving others as Christ with warmth and attentiveness.
I can honestly say all of my professors were incredibly hospitable. I felt very welcomed at this school before I was even enrolled in courses. When I emailed a professor, they were not only very quick to respond, but very approachable and understanding. We were also encouraged to be hospitable to our peers- we were always reminded to be respectful when other students posted viewpoints that we disagreed with.
3. Respect for Persons: Recognizing the image of God. in each person and honoring each one in their giftedness and limitations.
I continually felt respected as a valuable member of the University of Mary community. Professors and fellow students were encouraging and motivating with their feedback. When I was struggling or needed help, I was also met with mercy from my professors. As students, we were encouraged to treat one another in a kind and respectful manner.
4. Prayer: Attending to the mystery and sacredness of life, abiding in the divine presence, listening and responding to God.
It was so encouraging to see the University of Mary incorporate prayer as a regular part of our education. Modules were often lead with written prayers by professors, and sometimes verbal prayers were offered during video conferences, lectures, etc. It was an important reminder to offer all things to God- including the tasks we complete in our schooling.
5. Service: Meeting the needs of others in example of Jesus the servant leader.
University of Mary professors modeled service on a regular basis by their availability to their students. I reached out via email to professors throughout the weekend, and professors were always quick and kind with their response. We were continually encouraged to become service leaders in our role as a nurse by using evidence based practices and becoming change agents where we serve. We were also encouraged to volunteer in our community through a community volunteer project in our Community Health course.
6. Moderation: Honoring all of God’s creation and living simply with balance and gratitude.
The University of Mary encouraged us in moderation by reminding us that we as students are spirit, mind, and body- not just “mind” or academically oriented. Through the Prime Matters emails- we were encouraged to grow spiritually and other areas of life such as friendship. The school’s emphasis on growing in virtue helps us to become healthy, balanced, and positive members of the societies where we live and serve.
