In my room, I have a small statue of Jesus washing the feet of one of His disciples. In my mind, Jesus exemplifies servant leadership. A true leader is not afraid to get their “hands dirty” by not only jumping in to serve where needed, but also by serving those they are leading. A true servant leader will never say “that’s below my pay grade” but will rise to the call of duty. They are available to lighten the burden of their co-workers/peers.

During my time at the University of Mary, I was able to sign up for volunteer service for my Community Health Class. I spent 2.5 hours volunteering for So Others Might Eat- a program aiming to alleviate the burden of poverty and homelessness by providing meals, assisting with housing, providing physical/mental health services, and vocational training. I was able to help provide “snack packs” to patients as they were leaving breakfast as well as help clean the facility between the 30 minute breakfast shifts.

I was able to demonstrate leadership with the Bethesda Community Assessment group project from my Community Health Course. In this project, I initiated meetings and discussions with my group to ensure we would meet the necessary criteria for our project.
